Chap Goh Meh.

I guess the Lunar New Year is officially over :(

Yee Wei’s good at making me laugh.

Chap Goh Meh or Tzap Goh Mei represents the fifteenth and final day of the Lunar New Year period as celebrated by Chinese migrant communities. The term is from the Hokkien dialect and literally means the fifteenth day of the first month.

It is the occasion of the first full moon of the New Year.

The occasion is marked by feasting and various festivities, including the consumption of Tangyuan. In traditional Chinese culture, it is also celebrated as the Lantern Festival or the Shang Yuan Festival. In Southeast Asia, however, it coincides with the Chinese Valentine’s Day. It is also when young unmarried women gather to toss tangerines into the sea, in a hope that their future spouse will pick it up - a custom that originated in Penang, Malaysia. In the past, this is also the only day that unmarried ladies can be seen with their partners.

Note that another festival, Qi Xi is also sometimes referred to as ‘Chinese Valentine’s Day’.

Whilst most singletons will be polluting the water with biodegradable citrus fruits, it’ll be a mini celebration for me and Nat. It’s been nine lovely months! :)

I’m tempted to go to Taman Jaya this year to see what actually goes on. I know people throw tangerines into the ocean, sea, river, lake, pond, toilet etc but I’ve not seen it with my own eyes. Besides, there should be really lovely lanterns hanging out and about I’m sure.

I still hang lanterns on my front yard swing actually. I’ve been doing so since I was very young. Speaking of that, I vividly recall my bro having his masculine helicopter or tank lantern, my sis would get an ultra feminine butterfly and I would get some unisex/flexisexual fish. lol. Perhaps it has to do with the fact I love all things water. lol. No need recollection really, here’s a picture! Gawd knows how old I was. 2-3 years?

I look like a boy!!! lol.

Hahaha. Anyway, I hang those accordion styles ones now. And being the pyromaniac that I am, I like watching them burn when they catch fire. When the wind blows and the lantern sways, the candle inside would tip and set the lantern alight. Bro and sis would normally attempt to salvage it but I just watch and enjoy the growing flames. lol. Indeed, it’s dangerous to have matches lying around when I’m around :)

Pardon the lousy quality scanned image. Even so, I still look like a boy. lol.
